Multiplying Whole Numbers

Lesson 1 : Multiplication Properties
Main Idea: Students identify and apply the Commutative, Associative, and Zero Properties of Multiplication. They learn how the properties of multiplication can be used to simplify computation and to verify mental math and paper and pencil algorithms.
Standard(s): 5.NBT.B.7  Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Lesson 2: Multiplying by Powers of Ten
Main Idea: Students mentally compute products of whole numbers using place-value patterns and the properties of multiplication. They learn how basic facts and place-value patterns can be used to find a multiple of 10 or a multiple of 100.
Standard(s): 5.NBT.A.2

Lesson 3: Multiplying 2-digit Numbers by Multiples of Ten
Main Idea: Students use the standard algorithm and area models to multiply 2-digit numbers my multiples of ten. They learn how the standard algorithm for multiplying a 2-digit number by a multiple of ten is an extension of the algorithm for multiplying multi-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. They also learn how area models can be used to visualize this process.
Standard(s): 5.NBT.B.5  Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Lesson 4: Multiplying 2-Digit by 2-Digit Numbers
Main Idea: Students multiply two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. They learn how the standard multiplication algorithm breaks the calculation into simpler calculations using place value starting with the ones, then the tens, and so on.
Standard(s): 5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Lesson 5: Multiplying Greater Numbers
Main Idea: Students multiply two-digit numbers by factors with more than two digits. They learn how the standard algorithm for multiplying whole numbers with factors having three or more digits is just an extension of the algorithm for multiplying two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers to greater place values.
Standard: 5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Lesson 6: Problem Solving- Draw a Picture and Write an Equation
Main Idea: Students use diagrams and write equations to solve problems. They learn how information in a problem can often be shown using a diagram and used to solve the problem. They also learn how some problems can be solved by writing and completing a number sentence or equation.
Standard(s): 5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
