Chapter 2: Plant Structures and FunCTIONS

Lesson 1- Vascular Plants
Vascular plants are classified as seedless and seed plants. Most seed plants have flowers. Scientists classify vascular plants by whether they produce spores or seeds and flowers or no flowers. Some plants grow from spores. Others grow from
seeds.

Lesson 2- Plant Transport System
Vascular plants have special structures for the
transport of materials such as sugar, water, and
minerals. Vascular plants have a transport system made up of roots, stems, and leaves. Xylem carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves. Phloem carries food from the leaves to the rest of the plant. Different plants have different kinds of roots. Roots absorb water and minerals into the plant.
Vocabulary
  • xylem
  • phloem
  • cambium

Lesson 3- Photosynthesis and Respiration
Plants use carbon dioxide and sunlight to build sugar and release oxygen. Plants and animals break
sugar down to release energy, carbon dioxide, and water. Leaves capture and use the energy of the sun to make food through photosynthesis. Photosynthesis uses light
energy, carbon dioxide, and water to produce oxygen and sugar. Sugar is used for food in plants. Cellular respiration is  the process by which plants break down sugar chemically to release its energy.
