Unit 3: Physical Science

7: Types of Matter

Lesson 1: Properties of Matter

Main Idea: Students will describe the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students will be able to explain how matter can change from one state to another with changes in temperature.
Vocabulary
  • volume
  • mass
  • matter
  • weight
  • state of matter
  • melting point
  • evaporation
  • boiling point
  • freezing point
  • sublimation
  • density

Lesson 2: Elements
Main Idea: Students will recognize that elements make up matter. They will discover that atoms are the building blocks of elements.
Vocabulary
  • element
  • atom
Meet the Elements- They Might Be Giants

Lesson 3: Classifying Elements
Main Idea: Elements are made up of atoms, which are made up of smaller particles.  Elements can be metals, nonmetals, or metaloids. The periodic table is separated into rows called periods and columns called rows or families. Elements in the same family are related due to sharing similar chemical properties.

Lesson 4: Mixtures
Main Idea: The differences in chemical and physical properties of substances  are used to separate mixtures and identify compounds.
Vocabulary
  • mixture
  • suspension
  • solution
  • solvent
  • solute
  • solubility
  • filtration
Lesson 5: Compounds
Main Idea: During chemical reactions, the atoms in the reactants rearrange to form products with different properties. Differences in chemical and physical properties of substances are used to separate mixtures and identify compounds.
Vocabulary
  • chemical change
  • compound
  • chemical formula
  • subscript
  • hydrocarbon
