Adding and Subtracting mixed numbers

Lesson 1: Estimating Sums and Differences of Mixed Numbers
Lesson 2: Modeling Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Numbers
Lesson 3: Adding Mixed Numbers
Lesson 4: Subtracting Mixed Numbers
Lesson 5: More Adding Subtracting mixed Numbers
Lesson 6: Problem Solving- Draw a Picture and Write an Equation

  • proper fraction: a fraction less than 1; its numerator is less than its denominator
  • mixed number: a number that combines a whole number and a fraction
  • improper fraction: a fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator
Lesson 1: Estimating Sums and Differences of Mixed Numbers
Main Idea: Students estimate sums and differences of fractions and mixed numbers. They learn how sums and differences of mixed numbers can be estimated by rounding each mixed number to the nearest whole number.
Standard (s): 5.NF.A.2
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.

Lesson 2:  Modeling Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Numbers
Main Idea: Students use models to add and subtract mixed numbers. They learn how models can be used to show different ways of adding and subtracting mixed numbers.
